Haines Maple Grove Cemetery US Route 1A/ Houlton Road

Haines Maple Grove Cemetery

Early settlors in Maple Grove started this cemetery by the 1850s and the last known burial was in 1913. It had fallen into bad condition by the 1950s. The remains of Wingate and Mary Haines and some other relatives are buried here. Thanks to volunteers starting around 1990, it was cleared of overgrowth, a few broken stones were repaired, and a wooden sign was erected with the name of the cemetery on it. Today, thankfully, more volunteers continue to improve it. In 2023, donations from Haines family members paid for the installation of a permanent stone marker to replace the decayed wooden sign.

The cemetery is open for touring at any time.

At 1:00 p.m., Kim Sebold, PhD, Professor of History at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, will give an overview of the cemetery and describe how her students have studied the stones and conducted historical research of some of the names, especially Civil War veterans. Although many of the grave markers once in this cemetery have been removed, the site is an important part of our family history.

This site is also on US Route 1A/ Houlton Road, approximately 1.25 miles north of Friends Church and on the opposite side of the road. The cemetery has no parking space. Parking on the wide shoulders of the highway is available, but use extreme caution as traffic moves very fast on this section.
